Statement on Parents' Rights to Withdraw Children from Religious Education (RE) Lessons

At Queenborough School & Nursery, we respect and uphold the rights of parents regarding their children's Religious Education (RE). According to the legal framework governing RE in England, parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or any part of RE lessons. This right is enshrined in the Education Act and applies to all registered pupils in maintained schools and academies.

Key Points Regarding the Right to Withdraw:

  1. Opportunities for Discussion: Parents are encouraged to discuss their decision with school leaders prior to making this decision. This dialogue can help clarify any concerns and ensure that parents are fully informed about the educational content and its relevance. An invitation to have a discussion of this sort is not an indication that the school will not comply with a parent's right to withdraw.
  2. Awareness of the RE Curriculum: We ensure that parents who wish to withdraw their children from RE are informed about the RE curriculum being taught. Our curriculum is designed to be relevant to all pupils and to respect diverse personal beliefs.
  3. Annual Review: The school may choose to review the withdrawal request each academic year in consultation with the parents, allowing for any changes in circumstances or beliefs.
  4. Implications of Withdrawal: It is important to note that the right of withdrawal from RE does not extend to other areas of the curriculum. If discussions on religious matters arise in other subjects, pupils may still engage in those conversations as part of their broader education.

At Queenborough School & Nursery, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that respects the diverse beliefs of our community while ensuring that all pupils receive a well-rounded education. If you have any questions or wish to discuss the withdrawal process further, please do not hesitate to contact us.
